BremnerDuke achieves green building milestone

Released: 1/27/2010

BremnerDuke's new MOB at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Mishawaka is the first Indiana building to be LEED® Gold certified using the LEED for Core & Shell Rating System

INDIANAPOLIS, Jan. 27, 2010 – A new medical office building (MOB) in Mishawaka, Ind., developed and owned by BremnerDuke Healthcare Real Estate, isn’t just the first medical facility in the state to achieve LEED® Gold for Core & Shell (CS) certification. It is the first Indiana building of any type to earn such a high level of “green” building recognition using the LEED-CS Rating System.

Indianapolis-based BremnerDuke announced today that the 205,000 square foot MOB it constructed on the newly opened 90-acre Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center (SJRMC) campus in Mishawaka has been LEED certified to the Gold level by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

The LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings. LEED Gold certification recognizes that BremnerDuke has delivered a building that meets a high level of stringent, environmentally friendly and energy efficient standards.

"Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center congratulates BremnerDuke on this tremendous recognition in receiving LEED certification," says Thomas A. Reitinger, SJRMC's Interim President and CEO. "We are proud to be part of a dynamic healthcare campus that boasts two projects, our new hospital and the attached Medical Office Building, of which future construction ventures can look to as the standard in protecting the environment and maximizing energy efficiency."

“We are delighted to have earned national recognition for this high-performance green medical building,” says Deeni Taylor, Executive Vice President, BremnerDuke. “With its new campus, SJRMC followed the Green Guide for Healthcare, a national self-certification program for healthcare construction. So we are especially pleased to have been able to support that green building initiative with this innovative new MOB.”

“BremnerDuke’s LEED certification demonstrates tremendous green building leadership,” says Rick Fedrizzi, USGBC President, CEO & Founding Chair. “The urgency of USGBC’s mission has challenged the industry to move faster and reach further than ever before, and BremnerDuke serves as a prime example with just how much we can accomplish.”

The four-story outpatient structure earned the distinction after submitting a detailed application outlining energy efficiency and a variety of sustainable strategies required for certification and scoring 35 LEED rating points. The new MOB, which is connected to the new 254-bed Saint Joseph hospital on all four levels, is located at 611 E. Douglas Rd. in Mishawaka. CSO Architects Inc. and Duke Construction designed and built this LEED project for BremnerDuke.
